I've gotten some deposits back but most of the time (like most folks) I've gotten screwed out of at least a portion of it. I believe that in this case, that landlord knew he had effed up by forcing our hand, so he was prepared to give me the deposit back without question. Also, we made a ton of repairs and painted but never charged him for supplies or time invested. He knew he was getting the better deal. I fretted over it till it was over, though.
